The Age of AI- Frontline Dcumentary Review

In class today we watched the PBS produced show Frontline's documentary on the Age of A.I                ( Artificial Intelligence).  The documentary was very eyeopening and viewers learned all about the scary reality that is coming due to the fact AI is taking over the world.

One of the biggest reasons for Job loss here in the United States is due to AI especially in the automobile industry. Even now AI is taking over the acting industry. A relevant topic with this is  WGA strike. Many writers are going on strike as they are not being paid enough but also AI is writing scripts and information for the writers instead which is very sad. A.I is also taking jobs in the hospitality industry. Panera Bread, McDonalds, and many more fast food restaurants are turning to self serve order systems which is taking away many jobs for people.  While it may be faster for customers to order at a tablet it is very unfortunate jobs are being taken away and many do not know where to turn next.

It is also scary how much all these online websites and google, facebook, and other social media sites know about us. These sites want to know so much about us. Google looks at everything we browse and looks at traces of what we look up to know about us. In my opinion this is absolutely horrifying and makes us think how much do people know about us. Google and Facebook " cast a net for data".

Artificial Intelligence is taking over our world and it is a very scary reality.

All About Google

Close your eyes and picture the internet, I bet there's a good chance you are thinking of Google right now. Google has taken the world by storm since its founding. Let's take a deep dive into the history and the amazing impact Google has had on society and the world. \

Google is an American founded website search engine. It was created by two Stanford University students Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998. Ever Since Google's founding it has taken over the world which is honestly kind of scary! In fact in 2023 Google was responsible for 98.2% of the market share which shows how much of a dominant search engine it is. Google also gets 8.5 billion searches a day which is truly insane to think about. I think that information alone proves how much we really rely on the internet and technology to communicate with one another. Google makes anything and mostly everything available to us at our fingertips. In 2013 Google had an internet shortage ( basically it stopped working) for five minutes and due to that forty percent of the world’ internet usage dropped. That proves that as a society we really do depend on Google to get our information, and really live our life.

Without google nothing is available to us. Google is our gateway to information and our way to connect with the world. With that being said it is our way to access information that may not be good or valuable. It can also lead to misinformation which can lead to bad communication. The use of google can also lead to cyberbullying and cruel information online. If we did not have google people would not be able to access the websites online that lead to cyberbullying and misinformation. I often think about the January 6th riots and wonder if we did not have google or the power to get on websites or social media sites would the riots or protests would have happened? I also wonder if without google and the internet we would not be as divided in political views. If we did not have the power to share information or create accounts expressing our political views, maybe we wouldn't be as divided as a country or be so vocal about political views. Google is a truly amazing resource but with all good things there are some negatives but overall I do find Google truly amazing and could not imagine life without it. Google also has many resources now like google maps, google earth, google scholar, google images, google chrome, and doodle for google.

I can not imagine a world without google. I personally use google chrome which is google's fast and free internet web browser ( https://blog.google/products/chrome/) for almost everything I do. Without google I could not do anything I do on a regular basis. I wouldn't be able to communicate with loved ones overseas, complete homework assignments, and everything else the internet provides for us. Google is truly amazing and provides us the ability to know anything.

Anti War News

Using the First Amendment to share Anti War news and opinions

For this blog post assignment I was asked to look at two online news sources Antiwar.com and The American Conservative. As an avid news follower I was excited to take a deep dive on these websites as I have never heard of them before.

Unfortunately we live in a world where it is not always rainbows and butterflies and we all agree, in fact right now more than ever we are a very divided country and all have very different political opinions and views. With that being the case many people are divided on the topic of war. Looking at these two websites that are very clearly against war was very interesting as the big news sources ( NBC, ABC, FOX, CNN, CBS) just cover the facts and tell the stories with non bias so it was refreshing to see a news source that unapologetically expresses their opinion even if some may find it controversial or against their views. At the end of the day there is always going to be war and disagreements in this world so it is good that writers and/or authors are not afraid to use their voices and the First Amendment to share how they feel about war.

Antiwar.com and The American Conservative are both easy to follow websites and do a great job of expressing their views on war. I would recommend both these websites to people who believe in antiwar activity.

Blog Post 5- Technology and Facebook reflection.

 September 2023

Wow! That is all I can say after learning all about technology from my classmates. It is truly fascinating how much we really depend on technology to communicate with one another. I was most intrigued when learning about Facebook and Tiktok as those are two social media apps I use on a daily basis to see what is happening in the world and connect with others. I am also a Strategic Communications major so I have more of an interest in learning about more modern day technology as it is what I will most probably be using in my future career.

Facebook was founded in February 2004 so it has been around for most of my life ( I was born in 2002) so I do not really remember a time without Facebook being in my life or in the news. What I did not know was how much we really depend on Facebook or the company Meta. Meta has created a monopoly and owns practically all the big social media apps that have taken over the internet. Without Facebook we would not be able to connect with others and get information so quickly. While Facebook has had some controversies and some cons it has really changed the way we communicate with others and I really can not see it going out of style since it is used all over the world across all generations.

I am thankful that we have the ability to connect with others at our fingertips.

The Eight Values of Freedom

During the last three weeks of being in Media, Law, and Literacy we have learned all about our rights as humans residing in the United States of America. When I personally think of American rights and freedoms I automatically think of The First Amendment, which states, “ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”.( constitution.congress.gov). My personal definition of the First Amendment is that everyone residing or living in the United States has every right to use their voice whether that be written or spoken to express how they are feeling and to stand up for what they believe in. As someone who was not born in the United States I really understand how much of a gift or privilege the First Amendment is and how we should really use it to our advantage and not to use it to hurt people or spread hate or violence. In class we also talked about the eight values of expression which are Marketplace Of Ideas,  Participation In Self government, Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment, Check of Government Power, Promote Tolerance, Promote Innovation, and Protect Dissent. These are all so important but the one that stood out to me the most personally was Promote Tolerance

Promote Tolerance really stood out to me out of the eight values of expression as, “ been argued that freedom of speech, especially through our  practice of extending protection to speech that we find hateful or personally upsetting, teaches us to become more tolerant in other aspects of life.”( medlawlit blog quote). In my mind the first thing that came to my mind when reading that off the Media Law and Lit blog was all the protests I have seen in the news growing up. One thing about this generation is we are not afraid to use our voice to stand up for what we believe in. Unfortunately within the last few years the United States has been a divided country and that has led to a lot of negativity and protests. That being said, due to the First Amendment it gets complicated as while we all have the right to express anger or be upset with a government decision we do not have the right to start and cause violence. It upsets me that for some people the first and only thing that will fix a problem is to cause violence which in reality does not take you anywhere being civil and using your voice for good is what takes you far in life.

The First Amendment is a very important United States Of America value and principle. I always hope that it is used for good and not violence. Violence is never the answer but we should still remain to stand up for what we believe in. We are all very lucky we have the right to the First Amendment.

The Supreme Court

One of the first things that comes to my mind when thinking about the United States and its government is the Supreme Court. In my opinion the Supreme Court is fascinating, especially the fact that members of the Supreme Court are a part of it until death or resignation, there is no timeline.

I was excited to learn more about the Supreme Court as unfortunately I am not that well educated on the whole system and am eager to learn more about how the court makes important decisions for the millions of people residing in the United States of America.

The first thing that I found very interesting and surprised me the most was that there has only been one hundred and fifteen members of the Supreme Court since it was first founded  in 1789. I also did not know the President is the only one who picks and nominates a new judge into the Supreme Court and the US senate is the one who confirms and denies his pick. I find that to be a lot of pressure and also a way to have bias into our country as I can imagine a president may pick a justice with a similar political view.

When thinking about the Supreme Court the first thing that comes to my mind is the impact RGB had on women. I will never forget the day when the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade. It has only been a few times in my life when I have  seen a nation so much uncertainty and disagreement within our country. No matter your political affiliation or personal views on abortion we can all agree women living in the United States were affected by the Supreme’s Court to overturn Roe V. Wade.

The video was very insightful and I learned a lot about how much power and impact  a court of nine people have on the millions living in the United States of America. It is truly amazing.

My Top 5 News Sources

For as long as I can remember I have always been interested in current events and the news not only in my community but all over the world. Here is a list of my top 5 news sources. I hope you all find this helpful and a guide to find interesting and important news outlets.

  1. NBC News.

Whenever I think of my nightly routine when I am home with my family, the first thing I think of is watching NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt at 6:30 pm every night. The broadcast is an easy way to get all of the big headlines in one sitting. I also think Lester Holt and the other newscasters do an excellent job of not showing any bias with political affiliation or views. It is important to get the straight facts and not get news based on your own personal political beliefs.

  1. Sky News.

Another news source I use a lot is Sky News. I am from England and moved to the United States at 4 years old. I am not an American Citizen and all my extended family still live across the pond in the U.K. Therefore I still keep very updated with the British Media and like to know what is going on over there. It is also very interesting seeing the British perspective on American news.

  1. WCNC Charlotte.

After moving from England my family settled in Charlotte, North Carolina. WCNC Charlotte is a part of the NBC news family and is a great news source to get my local news stories and find out what is happening in my local community.

  1. Instagram.

Instagram is my personal favorite social media app. Not only is it a great way to see pictures of friends and family, it is an easy way to see the top headlines. It is a great way for college students to see the top news stories but not commit to watching a nightly news cast.

  1. Chicks In The Office Podcast.

Chicks In The Office is a podcast produced by Barstool Sports. Episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and are about an hour each. I listen to every episode as it is a great way to catch up with what is going on in the entertainment world. It is also nice to get news that is not so heavy and depressing.
